Our Unique Exercise Philosophy

The Strength Underground does exercise like nobody else.

Join any exercise “group” online and all you’ll hear about are these marathon gym sessions where people with seeming little else to do can spend 2 hours in the gym everyday pushing themselves to their absolute limits.

The other genre of workout application you’ll run into is:  “You must push every single set to absolute muscle failure!”.  And you’ll watch a sample workout they do and every exercise will just be the most grueling, absolutely back-breaking amount of effort and intensity.

Unless you’re full of piss and vinegar, you’re not going to be able to force yourself to do that every time you workout.  The adherents of this approach are always talking about “making the sacrifice”, “hard work”, and other mantras that are great when you’re in your 20’s, or are joining the SEALS or Marines.

We take the opposite approach: we’re looking for the minimum of time and effort to achieve the desired result.

Our goal is sustainability.

Why? Because whatever doesn’t get sustained goes away. You’ll lose your results.

We take a realistic look at the resources we have in terms of:

  • time (everybody has 15 minutes)
  • energy (you never have to push yourself harder than you can handle)
  • motivation (the easier your workout, the less motivation required)
  • willpower (if you enjoy your workout, it takes a lot less willpower to do consistently)

…and design our exercise system around that.

Most people do just the opposite. They plan out an elaborate exercise scheme that’s going to be pushing themselves to the limits in every area. Then they try to force themselves to conjure up the energy, time, motivation, and willpower to meet the heavy demands of their workout schedule.

As Dr. Phil would say, “How’s that working for you???”

That actually does work for a handful of people. But if you’ve tried that in the past, especially if you’ve tried it over and over again with many failed attempts, then keep reading.

So, how do we do it at the Strength Underground?

Number 1, we’re looking to spend the least amount of time and effort to get the biggest return on our investment.

Number 2, we’re looking to strengthen EVERY part of our body equally, leaving no weaknesses and building everything in balance. (nobody respects a guy who only works his arms…lol)

Number 3, we want to avoid any exercises that we hate. When you hate an exercise, it leads to you looking for excuses to avoid working out. That means you need even more willpower and self discipline to achieve your goal. The byproduct of that is you’re more likely to quit your routine. (We want to be on the lookout for anything that might tempt us to quit, and we cut that enemy down at the knees. I have identified these enemies, and my workout program has been designed specifically to evade them.)

Based on the above, we want to build a workout regimen that hits every muscle group, composed of exercises we find palatable, and that takes the least amount of time and effort.

When our workout routine abides by those principles it is finally possible to have consistency in our exercise. We can keep it going week after week, month after month. When you’ve never been able to do this in the past, it sounds impossible. I get that.

But when our workout routine is palatable enough that we don’t dread it, and can be banged out even in the midst of a busy schedule, and doesn’t leave us exhausted afterwards…. we can keep that system going day after day.

So the good news is: we make it easy enough that it doesn’t burn you out or overtrain you. And because it’s relatively easy, we can sustain this level of effort.

And when you have CONSISTENCY you have everything.

What can we achieve with this medium level of exertion?

We can achieve the #1 most important goal: building a base layer of strength throughout our entire body.

As long as you don’t overdo it and run into burnout and lack of energy and motivation.

This base layer of strength and fitness makes you look better, makes you feel better, and prepares you for any increased demands you may ever want to engage in.

Building this base layer of strength is great. Keeping this strength is even better. Whatever achievement you make in the musculature of your body, you want to lock it in.

In the past, your strength and your musculature likely yo-yo’d between nothing and “looking good”. Our system locks you into the “looking good” phase and keeps you there permanently. After all, what good are fleeting gains? They were only good for the moment, and now the moment is gone.

Consistency is what this game is all about. And it’s darned near impossible for the average person to have consistency when they’re killing themselves with super intense workouts that leave them exhausted, overtrained, and dreading their next workout day. That’s no way to live a happy life.
